Figma to WordPress: A Handoff Checklist for a Smoother Build

A polished desktop frame is not yet a build specification. A reliable Figma-to-WordPress handoff explains how the design responds, which patterns repeat, what content is real and what the client must be able to edit.

Use this checklist before development starts. It reduces guesswork without forcing the design team to document every implementation detail.

Confirm the page and template inventory

List the unique templates rather than counting every URL as a separate design.

  • Home and primary marketing pages
  • Service, product or location templates
  • Blog index, category and article templates
  • Search, form success, empty and error states
  • Privacy, terms and 404 pages

Show responsive intent

Provide representative mobile and desktop frames, then annotate the important behaviour between them. Explain what wraps, stacks, scrolls, hides or changes order. A developer should not have to infer whether a dense table becomes cards, horizontal scroll or a simplified summary.

Identify reusable components and states

Name recurring patterns and include the states visitors can trigger:

  • Navigation, buttons, cards, accordions and modal dialogs
  • Hover, focus, active, disabled, loading and error states
  • Form validation, confirmation and provider-failure states
  • Long headings, missing images and empty content

Use a small, intentional design system

Document type styles, spacing, colours, container widths, radii and shadows as reusable tokens. Consistent rules are easier to implement and maintain than slightly different values copied from individual frames.

Separate real content from placeholders

Mark approved copy and final assets clearly. Provide meaningful image descriptions, crop guidance, source files and licensing information. If content can grow, demonstrate realistic long examples so the layout is tested before launch.

Define the WordPress editing model

Agree on which areas are global, template-driven or page-specific. Identify reusable blocks, post types, taxonomies and required fields. The goal is not only to reproduce the Figma file; it is to give the content team a predictable editing experience without letting routine changes break the design.

Document interactions and third-party tools

Describe animation intent, keyboard behaviour, forms, bookings, maps, payments, analytics and any embedded services. Include failure and privacy expectations, not only the ideal interaction.

Agree on acceptance criteria

Before development begins, define the browsers, viewport range, accessibility expectations, content responsibilities, performance budget and review process. Keep one decision log so comments in Figma, email and project tools do not become competing specifications.

A good handoff leaves room for implementation expertise while making the product intent clear. That is how a strong design becomes a responsive, accessible and maintainable WordPress site.
