WordPress vs. Shopify for a Small Business: An Honest Comparison

WordPress and Shopify solve different problems. The useful question is not which platform is better in general, but which operating model fits the business, content and sales workflow.

When WordPress wins

WordPress offers broad control over content, themes, plugins and hosting. Consider it when:

  • Your site is primarily content or marketing: services, a portfolio, articles or booking information.
  • You want to choose the hosting environment and retain broad control over theme and plugin code.
  • You need detailed control over URLs, structured data and content templates.
  • You want to choose and manage your own hosting instead of using a hosted commerce platform.

When Shopify wins

Shopify centres the operating model on commerce. Consider it when:

  • E-commerce is the core of the business and you want checkout, catalogue and order management in one hosted platform.
  • You prefer the platform provider to manage hosting and much of the underlying infrastructure.
  • The store needs a well-supported theme and app ecosystem instead of a custom application stack.
  • You need to evaluate online, social or point-of-sale channels from one commerce system.

The real cost comparison

Compare the complete operating model, not only the platform subscription. WordPress requires hosting, updates, backups and security ownership. Shopify includes more of that platform operation, while its plan, app and payment costs depend on the merchant setup.

The better choice is the one whose ownership model matches your team, catalogue and sales workflow.

My rule of thumb

Selling products is the business? Shopify. Selling services, expertise or bookings? WordPress. Need a store and a serious content/SEO engine? Often WordPress + WooCommerce, or Shopify with a strong blog — that's a scoping conversation worth 30 minutes before you commit to either.

I build both. Share the catalogue, content and workflow in a project enquiry and I will recommend the appropriate direction if the project is a fit.
