10 Things Every Small Business Website Needs in 2026

A small business website needs to make it easy for visitors to understand the offer, trust the business and take the right next step. These ten fundamentals provide a useful review point.

The checklist

Score your current site honestly:

  • 1. A headline that says what you do, for whom, in under 5 seconds — not "Welcome to our website".
  • 2. Mobile-first design — people routinely search and browse on phones. Your site should work without pinching, zooming or hunting for controls.
  • 3. Fast load time — slow pages create friction before visitors can understand the offer.
  • 4. One clear call to action per page — call, book, or buy. Not seven competing buttons.
  • 5. Verifiable proof — permission-backed testimonials, owned work or case studies with clearly described evidence.
  • 6. Local SEO basics — your city in your titles, a Google Business Profile that matches your site, schema markup.
  • 7. HTTPS and an accurate privacy policy — essential trust and data-handling foundations.
  • 8. Contact info that's impossible to miss — phone/email in the header or footer of every page.
  • 9. Content that answers real customer questions — the questions people ask before they buy, answered on the page (this is also exactly what ranks on Google).
  • 10. A way to measure — analytics and call tracking, so you know what the site actually produces.

The one most Toronto businesses forget

Number 10. Without a reliable view of leads, sources and costs, it is difficult to tell which website decisions are helping the business. Measurement gives redesign and improvement work a useful baseline.

If several fundamentals are missing, prioritize the problems that block understanding, trust or conversion first. A project enquiry can include the current URL and the business outcome you need from a redesign.
